a work in progress

I’m having a bit of a moment
trying to verbalize my feelings today

Today is election day in Canada
it’s a civic duty
a right, an obligation and an honour
to vote
to spend the time it takes
to make an educated decision
about who you want
to run this country

I walked to the voting station
in the rain
singing
full of hope for this world

last night
came reports
that US military
killed Osama bin Laden

I have mixed emotions…
while I despise the atrocities
brought about by this man
and his followers
I simply can not celebrate
his death

instead….I choose to celebrate
the fact that we are one step closer
to bringing home
our men and women in service
there…
those from both sides of our borders…
I truly hope
that this does not martyr Bin Laden
and that peace will out….
So Mote It Be!

I’ve been involved in
multiple discussions
with many people
over the course of the day
about the death of bin Laden
and voting in Canada
the conspiracy theorists
are over the moon

I find that
my overall feeling now
is one of sadness

seems that many many people
are dancing in elation
that bin Laden is dead

and while I believe
what he did was abhorrent
he was someone’s son,
brother, uncle, father…
and that must be sad for them…

I’ve also heard people
bragging
that they “don’t vote”
that voting is a waste of time
because all the options
are corrupt…
and that makes me sad too

I try not to hate…
I think it’s more destructive to me
than to the focus of said emotion…

I must admit though
that I am failing dismally
at the not hating
when it comes to thinking
about those Westboro Baptist Church freaks.

I guess I just remain but a work in progress….
*sigh*
