I’m a bit of an odd duck…<\/span><\/p>\n

I know that some of you<\/span>
\nmay find that hard to believe<\/span>
\nbut there it is…<\/span><\/p>\n

case in point<\/span>
\nmy relationship with music<\/span><\/p>\n

I have had a soundtrack <\/span>
\nrunning thru my life<\/span>
\nright from an early age<\/span>
\nall my most precious memories<\/span>
\nare attached to music<\/span><\/p>\n

I was born on July 28th 1955<\/span>
\ntomorrow I turn 55<\/span><\/p>\n

my first memories <\/span>
\nare of the VOD playing the piano<\/span>
\nand her and my fadder<\/span>
\nsinging at the top of their lungs<\/span><\/p>\n

I remember songs like <\/span>
\nMoon River<\/a>
\nWaltzing Mathilda<\/a>
\nBoogie Woogie Piano<\/a>
\nRock around the clock <\/a>
\nVolare<\/a>
\nDream Lover<\/a><\/p>\n

and then as time went on<\/span>
\nthe radio became my friend<\/span>
\nDream<\/a>
\nOutta my Head<\/a>
\netc…<\/span><\/p>\n

I remember the very first<\/span>
\n45 record I ever saw…<\/span>
\nBig Girls Don’t Cry<\/a><\/p>\n

when I was 9 and we moved <\/span>
\naway from our extended family<\/span>
\nI felt isolated<\/span>
\ntill the teenage boy next door<\/span>
\nstarted singing <\/span>
\nMrs Brown<\/a> to me<\/span><\/p>\n

I survived my loneliness <\/span>
\nby listening to music<\/span>
\nmusic and books…<\/span>
\nAaron Neville’s Tell it Like it is<\/a>
\nOtis Redding Dock of the Bay <\/a>
\nBill Withers Grandma’s Hands<\/a>
\nThe Guess Who – These Eyes<\/a><\/p>\n

as time went on and I got older<\/span>
\nI discovered rock<\/span>
\nmy very first album was<\/span>
\nPaul McCartney’s Ram On<\/span>
\nand I still remember <\/span>
\nall the words to <\/span>Uncle Albert<\/a>
\nI wore the grooves out of more<\/span>
\nK-Tel albums than anyone <\/span>
\nin my neighbourhood<\/span><\/p>\n

and then I discovered rock and roll<\/span>
\nand then metal<\/span><\/p>\n

my families holidays revolved <\/span>
\naround albums<\/span>
\nHerb Albert’s & the Tijuana Brass’s<\/span>
\nA Taste of Honey<\/a>
\nDon Maclean’s American Pie<\/a>
\nSimon and Garfunkle’s<\/span>
\nBridge over Trouble Waters<\/a>
\nthe Band Stage Fright<\/a><\/p>\n

now days <\/span>
\nI can very clear be rendered<\/span>
\nto a time and location in my past<\/span>
\nby music from that time<\/span><\/p>\n

the other constant in my life<\/span>
\nhas been my “romantic” nature<\/span>
\nnot so much the concept of romance<\/span>
\nbetween a man and a woman<\/span>
\nalthough the occasional bodice ripper<\/span>
\ndoesn’t suck<\/span><\/p>\n

but the thought of “happily ever after”<\/span>
\nhas made me a melancholy sort<\/span>
\nand meant that I’ve used melancholy music<\/span>
\nto adjust my mood<\/span>
\nmost of my life<\/span><\/p>\n

I love 70’s rock n roll<\/span>
\nJethro Tull’s Locomotive Breath<\/a>
\nJimi Hendrix All Along the Watchtower<\/a>
\nJanis Joplin – Me n Bobby McGee<\/a>
\nElton John Tiny Dancer<\/a><\/p>\n

I love metal<\/span>

\nBlack Sabbath’s Iron Man<\/a>
\nDeep Purple Child in Time<\/a><\/p>\n

I love the blues<\/span>
\nStevie Ray Vaughn’s Riviera Paradise<\/a><\/span>
\nGary Moore’s Still got the Blues<\/a><\/span>
\nAlvin Lee’s Bluest Blues<\/a><\/span> <\/p>\n

I love 80’s pop<\/span>
\nThe Bangles Walk like and Egyptian<\/a>
\nBonnie Tyler Total Eclipse of the Heart<\/a>
\nBilly Joel Uptown Girl<\/a><\/p>\n

I love hair bands<\/span>
\nGuns n Roses Welcome to the Jungle<\/a>
\nVan Halen’s Jamie’s Crying<\/a><\/p>\n

I’ve listened to Indie, Grunge,<\/span>
\nAlternative, Rap, Hip Hop, Country,<\/span>
\nand Classical<\/span><\/p>\n

I love the sound <\/span>
\nof Spanish style guitar <\/span>
\nwhere even the sad songs<\/span>
\nsound happy…<\/span>
\nGypsy Kings Bambeleo<\/a>
\nJesse Cook Gravity<\/a>
\nOttmar Liebert La Luna<\/a><\/p>\n

I love chorals<\/span>
\nLibera Salva Me<\/a>
\nPerpetuum Jazzile – Africa<\/a>
\nThe Mormon Tabernacle Choir Handel’s Halleujah<\/a><\/p>\n

I love just about any kind of music<\/span><\/p>\n

Enya’s Watermark <\/a>transports<\/span>
\nme back to the day my paternal <\/span>
\nGrandmother died…<\/span>
\njust as if it was right this minute<\/span>
\nand <\/span>Oh Canada<\/a>
\nmakes me cry <\/span>
\nevery single time<\/span>
\nI hear it<\/span>
\nwhether it’s sung by 1 child<\/span>
\nor 10, 000 hockey fans<\/span><\/p>\n

some people say<\/span>
\nthat because I listen <\/span>
\nto a lot of melancholy music<\/span>
\nthat I must really be depressed<\/span>
\nall the time<\/span><\/p>\n

but truly?<\/span><\/p>\n

I revel in the memories<\/span>
\nof life and death<\/span>
\nas they come to me<\/span>
\nin the sound of music<\/span><\/p>\n

so<\/span>
\ntonight<\/span>
\non the eve of my 55th birthday<\/span>
\nI watched the movie <\/span>Pirate Radio<\/a><\/p>\n

not, I thought<\/span>
\nfor the story<\/span>
\nbut for the sound track<\/span><\/p>\n

because I’d heard it was good…<\/span><\/p>\n

I was seriously surprised<\/span>
\nat the ending of this movie<\/span>
\nand for reasons <\/span>
\nbeyond my ken<\/span>
\nit move me to tears<\/span>
\nnot a little sniffle<\/span>
\nbut a full on sob…<\/span><\/p>\n

so here’s the odd duck part…<\/span><\/p>\n

as a 55 yr old<\/span>
\nI find that being moved to tears<\/span>
\nis no longer something <\/span>
\nto be embarrassed about<\/span><\/p>\n

being moved to tears<\/span>
\nis celebrating <\/span>
\na life well lived<\/span>
\nand a hope <\/span>
\nfor 55 or 60 more<\/span><\/p>\n
