“independent living”<\/p>\n

moving is traumatic
at any time
but at 80 it seems to be almost
the impossible task
<\/span>
this week she’s going thru
17 years of beloved belongings<\/span>
sorting what to take <\/span>
and what to send to storage
(a ploy to avoid separation anxiety)<\/span>
and what to throw away
<\/span><\/span>
for 8 of the 10 years
that I have lived
next door to her<\/span>
I printed off every email
any family member sent<\/span>
for her to read<\/span><\/span>
<\/span>
I just walked into her bedroom
to find her sitting on the floor<\/span>
reading all those 10 yr old emails<\/span>
one by one<\/span>
before deciding if she can throw them out<\/span><\/p>\n

some of them mark momentous family occasions<\/span>
but those aren’t the one’s she’s keeping<\/span><\/p>\n

the one she just read me goes like this:<\/span>
Rodney Dangerfield says “we were so poor<\/span>
when I was growing up<\/span>
it’s a damn good thing I was born a boy<\/span>
er I’d have had nothin to play with!”<\/span><\/p>\n

that’s the kind of stuff she’s keeping.<\/span><\/p>\n
