there are no sounds
\nfrom the machines in the house
\nthe fridge doesn’t gurgle
\nnor does the water cooler<\/p>\n
there is no buzz of computer
\nor ringing of the phone
\nand the clocks don’t tick
\nthere is no “silent”
\nringing in your ears<\/p>\n
the normally lightly outlined
\nobstacles in the house
\nno longer
\nstand out in relief
\nas you walk from room to room<\/p>\n
and what normally seemed
\ntwo steps away
\nnow seem to be further
\ninto the
\ndarker
\nquieter
\nhouse<\/p>\n
without power
\nand on a well…
\nthere are no showers or baths
\ncommodes don’t flush
\ndishes don’t get washed
\nlaundry doesn’t get done
\nand there’s no electric heat
\nfrom the base boards
\nor your electric fireplace<\/p>\n
it seems that
\neven the neighbours dogs
\ndon’t bark<\/p>\n
and while it’s snowing
\nthere are no sounds from outside
\nno traffic on the roads
\nno air traffic overhead<\/p>\n
the lack of sound and light
\nis deafening and blinding
\nit is complete<\/p>\n
even the sounds of the weather
\nare noises we are not familiar with<\/p>\n
17 hours
\nmakes me realize
\nhow completely
\nwe as humans rely
\non electricity
\nin our lives<\/p>\n
even reading by candlelight
\nis a trial
\nthere is no coffee or tea
\nno breakfast or lunch
\nno relief<\/p>\n
it’s both awesome
\nand terrifying
\nhow startling
\nhaving no power
\nfor 17 hours
