I just watch Selma<\/p>\n
It huts my heart
\nto know that
\nthis actually happened
\nin my lifetime<\/p>\n
I was 10 in 1965
\nliving in a small town
\nin Ontario Canada<\/p>\n
As a white child
\nI knew nothing
\nof Selma Alabama<\/p>\n
I remember
\nmy parents horror
\nat the news
\nof events
\nas they transpired<\/p>\n
but a white child
\nIn a liberal community
\nin the great whit north
\nI had no real understanding<\/p>\n
I still barely
\nunderstand.<\/p>\n
This I do know…
\nIf we are not vigilant,
\nIf we just spend our lives
\nwith our eyes closed…
\nrelying on those in charge
\nto make the right decisions
\nand do what’s right
\nfor mankind…<\/p>\n
…we will lose
\nwe will lose to apathy
\nwe will lose to those
\nwilling to step up
\nand take charge
\nwith ignorance
\nand force
\nwith violence
\nand hate
\nand fear<\/p>\n
..hate and violence
\nare learned responses<\/p>\n
gut responses to fear
\nfear of change
\nfear of loss
\nfear of differences<\/p>\n
fear and violence
\ntaught at the knees
\nof people suffering
\nfrom fear<\/p>\n
Can we not learn
\nfrom our past?<\/p>\n
There’s a great deal
\nof dissent
\nabout some of the
\nrepresentations
\nin the movie Selma<\/p>\n
Instead of bitching
\nabout the right and wrong
\nof representations<\/p>\n
Can we not learn from
\nwhat we know happened?
\nwhat we have seen
\nlive footage of?<\/p>\n
Or are we already
