I’ve come to understand

\nthat my nattering
\nhad a great deal to do
\nwith my not ever having
\nreally been a mother<\/p>\n
I didn’t have midnight feedings
\nor colic
\nI didn’t have diapers
\nand skinned knees
\nI didn’t have your first word
\nyour first step
\nor your first boyfriend<\/p>\n
I didn’t even have your
\nsuicide<\/p>\n
I gave birth
\nand then you were gone
\nI knew you were going
\nbut it didn’t make it
\nany easier<\/p>\n
here I am 37 years later
\nand I’m no more a mother
\nthan I was the day you were born<\/p>\n
still
\nonce again<\/p>\n
