I’ve just had this convo with a friend who’s been diagnosed with MS and as I write I\u2019m surprised to find it true!<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a conversation that I have had with many fellow \u201ccompromise auto-immune\u201d friends and acquaintances over the last couple of years.<\/p>\n

You have to make peace with your disease\u2026you personally \u2013 not your kids, not your husband\u2026not the people you deal with on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

I hear people say all the time that I shouldn\u2019t let my diseases define me.\u00a0 But they do \u00a0– physically.\u00a0 It\u2019s my diseases that stop me from crawling on my knees, lifting anything heavy or running. It\u2019s my diseases that govern what I eat, when I eat and how I eat or how I use the facilities, when I do and frequency. Just as it is my diseases that decide just how much rest I need.<\/p>\n

The only way for me to \u201clet it go\u201d was to make peace with it.\u00a0 To not get angry with it anymore (no small feat for a berserker like me) to recognize the signs when my body was saying \u201cslow down\u201d or \u201ceat more of this\u201d or \u201cdon\u2019t eat that crap no more\u201d.<\/p>\n

So\u2026I pay attention to what my body needs\/wants and make allowances for when I can\u2019t do what I want. I\u2019m patient. I\u2019ve worked at the concept that not being able bodied does not mean I\u2019m lazy, or stupid or less than.\u00a0 If I\u2019m traveling \u2013 I travel for a day and take a day off.\u00a0 I arrange that with friends if I\u2019m travelling with them.\u00a0 If I need to go to bed before everyone else does\u2026I do.\u00a0 If I need to spend a day lying around doing nothing more strenuous than holding my kobo\u2026I do.<\/p>\n

And best of all\u2026I make no apologies.\u00a0 Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose\u2026but mostly I\u2019m working at being kind to myself for a change.\u00a0 It\u2019s all part of the wonderfulness of me\u2026right?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
