the sound: <\/strong><\/span>Enya \u2013 the Celts<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <\/strong><\/span>Enya – Watermark,<\/strong><\/span><\/a> <\/strong><\/span>Enya \u2013 Angels<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <\/strong><\/span>Enya \u2013 Exile<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

The sounds of sirens approaching forced Grey and Rosie, Snot and I back into the truck and Grey drives around the long block so that we could go by the scene once again.<\/p>\n

When we get there, there are cops everywhere. The black cop is on his back on the hood of the car\u2026he looks unconscious. The original white cop is sitting on the curb nursing a broken nose and Robert and the bike are no where to be seen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the fuck?\u201d I stammered\u2026.\u201dwhere\u2019d he go?\u201d and when no one answered I asked again \u201ctell me I didn\u2019t just imagine all that?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rosie turned to me \u201cRobert is in the habit of getting away before there\u2019s enough cops to take him down\u201d she said tiredly. \u201cWhen we were kids we called him \u2018Robert the rabbit\u2019 cos he could just disappear into some rabbit hole and not be seen for hours\u2026course with Mama he\u2019d never quite outlast the trouble\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough? Enough? Just how fuckin many is enough?\u201d I shouted loudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cSHUT UP BABY!\u201d came Grey\u2019s reply.<\/p>\n

We eased past the commotion on the street headed back to the farm. I sat quietly in my seat (for once) while Grey and Rosie carried on in pained silence. In no time at all I was nodding off again and I didn\u2019t wake until we were pulling through the back gate of the farm. <\/p>\n

\u201cSomething\u2019s wrong\u201d said Rosie<\/p>\n

\u201cwha what?\u201d I asked, brains still dulled by sleep.<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert should be here\u201d she replied. <\/p>\n

\u201cwell maybe he\u2019s hiding in the barn\u201d I suggested.<\/p>\n

Grey snorted \u201cRobert doesn\u2019t hide \u2013 but it would be just like him to be up at the big house telling Mama his story without the risk of us embellishing it at all.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grey maneuvered the truck across the field and through the gate and then up the hill through the big old oak trees and through the second gate to slowly move past the garden. Snot is squirming around in the box of the truck looking uncomfortable and Rosie is trying to clean herself up and make herself presentable. <\/p>\n

\u201cyou look fine\u201d Grey admonishes<\/p>\n

\u201cnot fine enough for Mama\u201d comes the reply \u201cit\u2019s hard to look fine in someone else\u2019s sweats.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was the best we could do on short notice\u2026just be glad we left your jeans and shirt with the hospital\u2026Mama would have smacked me silly had she seen all of Barry\u2019s blood on your clothes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know\u2026she\u2019s still always after you to take care of us all\u201d Rosie replied.<\/p>\n

As we drive slowly past the garden I look over to see the evidence of someone having recently been working in the rows. Rosie looks over my shoulder and shudders. <\/p>\n

\u201cyou\u2019re right\u2026he\u2019s here, the ass\u201d<\/p>\n

We drive around the side of the butter yellow house, all of us watching the big chairs on the wrap around veranda expecting to see someone at any moment. As we approach the front of the house we see Snot\u2019s motorcycle parked on the front walk and Snot mutters about how he\u2019s gonna get that away before Mrs. K catches him.<\/p>\n

\u201cyou just get it and let out\u201d Rosie says\u2026\u201dwe\u2019ll keep Mama busy\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll just go with Snot\u201d I suggest hopefully.<\/p>\n

\u201cnot likely\u201d says Rosie\u2026\u201deveryone has to meet Mama sooner or later, and you just might be the ticket we need to keep us all out of Mama\u2019s bad graces\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat\u201d I think \u201cno pressure there\u2026.nothing like feeling like yer being presented like the prize hog.\u201d<\/p>\n

I look up as I hear the sound of a wooden screen door slam to see Robert standing on the porch just outside the door. He looks grim, and waves us in…I can see the flash of silver at his wrists.<\/p>\n

We all get out of the truck and as I walk around the front of the old truck I head a big accented voice call from inside the house \u201cTyrone? Siobh\u00e1n?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTyrone? Siobhan? Huh who?\u201d I muttered shaking my head as I traipse up the stairs ahead of Grey and Rosie to the porch as Robert swings open the door and waves us into the entryway.<\/p>\n

Behind us I heard the click of Snot flipping up his kickstand and a slight rustle as he stealthily walks his bike across the lawn to the driveway. <\/p>\n

I look over my shoulder to see the big man virtually skulking in an attempt to make a clean getaway.<\/span><\/p>\n
