Stood still on a highway<\/span>
I saw a woman<\/span>
By the side of the road<\/span>
With a face that I knew like my own<\/span>
Reflected in my window<\/span>
Well she walked up to my quarterlight<\/span>
And she bent down real slow<\/span>
A fearful pressure paralysed me<\/span>
In my shadow<\/span><\/p>\n

She said “Son, what are you doing here?<\/span>
My fear for you has turned me in my grave”<\/span>
I said “Mama, I come to the valley of the rich<\/span>
Myself to sell”<\/span>
She said “Son, this is the road to Hell”<\/span><\/p>\n

On your journey ‘cross the wilderness<\/span>
From the desert to the well<\/span>
You have strayed upon the motorway to Hell <\/span><\/p>\n

Well I’m standing by a river<\/span>
But the water doesn’t flow<\/span>
It boils with every poison you can think of<\/span>
And I’m underneath the streetlights<\/span>
But the light of joy I know<\/span>
Scared beyond belief way down in the shadows<\/span>
And the perverted fear of violence<\/span>
Chokes a smile on every face<\/span>
And common sense is ringing out the bells<\/span>
This ain’t no technological breakdown<\/span>
Oh no, this is the road to Hell<\/span><\/p>\n

And all the roads jam up with credit<\/span>
And there’s nothing you can do<\/span>
It’s all just bits of paper<\/span>
Flying away from you<\/span>
Look out world take a good look<\/span>
What comes down here<\/span>
You must learn this lesson fast<\/span>
