do come true&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size:130%;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I may have mentioned it many times before&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I was raised mostly in NW ON by a father (aka the fadder)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that was an Ontario Provincial Police Officer<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">much of who and what he is and where he came from<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">was a focal point in my life for many years<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">our lives (and holidays) revolved around<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">trips to Toronto<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to allow my father to re-connect<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">with his mother, and his rather large family<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I grew up knowing intimately<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">all my aunts, uncles and cousins on my father&#8217;s side of the family<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and not so much the family of the VOD (my mother)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">who lived in Saskatchewan or British Columbia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Visiting my Grammo (aka grandmother Brown)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">was like stepping into a story book<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">for a child with a romantic nature<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">like me<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">see&#8230;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when my father came on the police force in the 195o&#8217;s<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">he made $2000.00 a year<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and as his father owned a large funeral directing firm<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that he&#8217;d started from scratch<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and nursed into a large, respectable, moneymaking concern<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the family had some monetary value<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not huge wealth by today&#8217;s standards<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but they didn&#8217;t go without<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that&#8217;s for sure<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there was real butter on the table<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not that white margarine you had to burst<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the colour button and squeeze thru to colour<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there was real fruit juice<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not crystals<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there was real roast beef for sandwiches<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not chubs of baloney<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and at Grammo&#8217;s house even the kids<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">got real jam and fresh veggies<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">spare no expense at Grammo&#8217;s house!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">so because Grammo would tuck a buck er two<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">into an envelope when I was quite little<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and we lived in Perth ON<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there was an obligation to travel towards them<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when holidays were due&#8230;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">an obligation that may have become habit<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but stood some of us in good stead<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">for developing kin ships with extended family<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grammo lived in (what at the time seemed to me to be)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a huge house on Lakeside Ave in Scarborough<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and old neighbourhood, even then<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">with large oak trees<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">off the Scarborough bluffs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when I was quite young there were<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">houses between Grammo&#8217;s and the bluffs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but over the years those were moved<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">or moved themselves<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">down the bluffs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">as the bluffs eroded&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grammo had more money than we did<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and when she first met my grandfather<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">not wanting to embarrass this &#8220;gent&#8221; in public<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">took lady lessons.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">as a result<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there were always Irish linens<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">table cloths, napkins etc<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(I believe I&#8217;ve also mentioned previously<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that I spent my formative years<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in Grammo&#8217;s basement<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">ironing said linens&#8230;cos that&#8217;s what<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">&#8220;young ladies&#8221; did for punishment)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grammo had 2 kinds of china patterns<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">one pattern was a Royal Doulton pattern<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">called Ainsley Durham Moore<br \/>lovely white with a burgundy ribbon<br \/>around the edge<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and trimmed out <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in gold leaf<br \/>used only on special dinner days<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">IE Christmas, birthdays etc<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grammo&#8217;s everyday pattern<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">was a Simpson&#8217;s pattern<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">from before Simpson&#8217;s and Sears became one<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a 50&#8217;s pattern called Belle Fiore<\/span><br \/><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" onblur=\"try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_llTCkOZXIY0\/TF2eriJdm6I\/AAAAAAAACB4\/JTxi3QYgDjo\/s1600\/Belle_Fiore_cu1_500.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 214px;\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_llTCkOZXIY0\/TF2eriJdm6I\/AAAAAAAACB4\/JTxi3QYgDjo\/s320\/Belle_Fiore_cu1_500.jpg\" alt=\"\" id=\"BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5502728790454672290\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and there was tons of it<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">every kind of dish, platter and plate<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">saucer and pitcher, teapots of all shapes and sizes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">one could possibly imagine<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and there were even<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">little double ended gizmo&#8217;s called egg cups<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">imagine&#8230;cups designed just for holding eggs!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in our extended family<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">over the years<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">we developed a routine<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">of the &#8220;elders&#8221; moving from the dining room<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to the living room for &#8220;afters&#8221; and coffee<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">whilst the elder of the grandchildren<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">did the dishes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">When we used the regular stuff<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">we just piled it all in the dishwasher<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">usually more than 3 loads<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">due to the amount of people<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and extra stuff in a place setting<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but we were indulged to a degree<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and plenty of times<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">members of the adult portion<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">of our family<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">would use the Belle Fiore<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">as discs for target practice<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">over the bluffs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grammo always smiled<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and ordered more plates from Simpsons<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">it was a heady time in my life<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and over time I&#8217;ve come to realize<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">both the financial commitment<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and emotional value of my Grammo&#8217;s<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">smiles over us turfing her china<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">over the bluffs&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">fast forward years later<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(12 yrs this past April to be exact)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I moved to BC..<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the reason&#8217;s were myriad<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I was sick enough at the time<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that I didn&#8217;t think that I&#8217;d live<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to see the first full year on the Island<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but I moved<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and started working at getting well<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and being more &#8220;normal&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>less dramatic, romantic,<br \/>less hiding, more living&#8230;<br \/><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">no drugs, no drinking, no fistfights<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">no dealing, no bars, no more full on crazy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">eventually I decided to<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mark important moments<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in my life<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">with a piece of Belle Fiore china<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in honour of my Grammo<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and all that she represented<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in making me the adult<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I strive to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Belle Fiore can now only be found<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">at replacement shops and china shops<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">around the world<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">mostly from the UK<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but as there was a huge migration<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">of Brits to the Island<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there&#8217;s been a bit here and there<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">over the last 12 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">so over the years that I\u2019ve been here<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019ve not become a regular antique crawler<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">just for special occasions<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">cos that\u2019s all I can afford\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and they are getting harder and harder to find\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">One year for Christmas<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">my cousins Colin and Roberta<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">gave me a tea cup and saucer<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019ve a couple of medium sized milk pitchers<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I bought one when I got my job at the U<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and one when the nefew graduated<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">my aunt Mal<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(short for Marigold &#8211; which is a kind of indication<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">of the era I&#8217;m talking about)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and her son Colin and his wife Roberta<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">got me a cream and sugar set on a wee tray<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">last year for Christmas<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and in June I bought a coffee cup and saucer<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when the Princess graduated..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">It\u2019s luck of the draw<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and not like I get to choose what I buy<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but mostly<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">if I find it and can afford it at the time I buy it<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when the Princess graduated<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I stopped at 2 or 3 different places<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and then found the coffee cup and saucer<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">at a place quite by accident&#8230;.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the manager was just telling me<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that a couple had been in the day before<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and \u201ccleaned them out\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when a seller walked in<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">with a box of stuff<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and the cup and saucer were right there!<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Kinda like providence if ya ask me\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">anyway&#8230;I tell you all this<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">so that I can tell you that a few weeks ago<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I mentioned my passion for Belle Fiore<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in an email to the whole family<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">which of course<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">started a round of &#8220;remember when&#8217;s&#8221;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">which prompted my Aunt to forward<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to the family<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a real estate listing<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">for the Lakeside Ave house<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(for $2.1  mil no less)<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the listing included pictures<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and while the outside sort of looks the same<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">gone is the interior of my memories<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">replaced by wood painted white<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and the grand interiors<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">of luxury homes in the 2000&#8217;s<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">however, since seeing the changes<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">wrought in those pictures of  Lakeside Ave<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019ve been dreaming of the past a lot<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a lot more than I have in a long long time\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019ve had this recurring dream<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">since just before my birthday<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">about Grammo sitting in \u201cFather\u2019s chair\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in the kitchen\u2026with a bunch of us\u2026.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">me, the bother, the blister, and 2 cousins<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and we were all very young\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the blister was about 4 or 5 methinks\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there was a general milling about of adults<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">at the other end of this huge kitchen\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">there was brown toast<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and real butter and crumpets,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">jam in pots and juice and milk\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">such luxury\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">The part of the dream<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that has been so vivid to me<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">was my intently watching Grammo<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">with her egg in an egg cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and her strips of toast for dunking,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and the tinkling of her family bracelet<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(that she rarely wore at breaky really\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">remind me to tell you of that bracelet another time)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u2026.the focus for me was the egg cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">\u2013 it was, at that age,<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">completely fascinating to me<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that there was actually<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a dish<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">specifically for holding soft boiled eggs<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and nothing else\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and it matched all the other dishes in the kitchen\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">And Grammo\u2019s act of tapping<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">around the top of the egg<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">with her butter knife<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to take just the top of the egg off<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to allow for dipping<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">strips of toast<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">was methodical and musical<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and when watching<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019d often hold my breath<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to see if it actually worked\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I was always amazed<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">that only the top broke<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and not the whole thing\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">wasn\u2019t that just the height of classy?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I was mesmerized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(jeez I do drag out telling a story eh?)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">As I said earlier\u2026.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I\u2019ve been dreaming about said egg cup<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">on a regular basis since before my b&#8217;day<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(which I might have mentioned<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">was more than a great day for me this year)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Anyway\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">You will now imagine my surprise\/shock\/tears<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">when I went to my mailbox today<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(something I\u2019ve been forgetting<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to do daily since the VOD moved away)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">and discovered a box\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">a smallish box with the return address of my aunt Marigold<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in handwriting that looks suspiciously<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(and more than anyone else in the family\u2026)<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">like Grammo&#8217;s<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I rushed back to my kitchen<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">to open the box<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">(no small feat considering<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">the amount and caliber of tape\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">but hey!&#8230;.it was precious cargo)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">inside I found a wee card<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">in
