I was up Island visiting friends in Port Alberni\u2026left there to drive home around 2:15 \u2013 it was hawt \u2013 damn hawt\u2026.and by the time I get all the way around the peninsula it\u2019s about a 3 hr trip<\/span><\/p>\n

Pixie was in the passenger seat in a carry bag as opposed to her dog crate\u2026said bag has mesh sides and I thought it would be cooler than the crate\u2026about an hour down the road I realize she\u2019s in full sun and cos I\u2019ve not been paying attention \u2013 I don\u2019t know for how long\u2026so I pull off at a roadside rest area just past the Nanoose turn off to rearrange the car to get her outta the sun<\/span><\/p>\n

I let her outta the carry bag and she couldn\u2019t stand up\u2026she kept falling over and was lethargic and her eyes were dull\u2026at first I was afraid that she\u2019d eaten something poisonous in the brush around my friend\u2019s home in Port Alberni\u2026and then I though \u201cheat stroke\u201d\u2026but the air conditioner was on in the car? Still she only weights 3.5lbs so maybe heat stroke?<\/span><\/p>\n

I tried but couldn\u2019t get her to drink water and every time I set her down she\u2019d fall forward like \u201cfalling in yer pudding\u201d onto the tip of her nose as opposed to laying down\u2026she couldn\u2019t hold her own weight up standing or sitting<\/span><\/p>\n

I did what most people do\u2026I panicked and wept a bit and tried to find a veterinarian in Naniamo on Sunday\u2026.apparently I was nuts.<\/span><\/p>\n

I went to PetSmart – a huge pet chain to ask them and they gave me lectures on where not to take her \u201ccos they\u2019ll kill yer doggie\u201d\u2026..but weren\u2019t so much help in the where to take her dept and in the meantime I\u2019m holding a rag doll that I can\u2019t even feel breathing\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

So I pulled into a mall parking lot and I started calling people I know that live in Naniamo \u2013 but it must have been the weather cos they where away er at the beach er sommat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once I had a bit of another bit of a boo hoo I ended up calling my friend Arlene who lives in the interior and works in Boston Terrier rescue and got her to look up symptoms of heat stroke in dogs on the WWW and read them to me \u2013 from 9 hours away in Lumby\u2013 and she looked up the numbers for vet\u2019s in Nanaimo \u2026none of whom returned my call when paged\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I gave up on Nanaimo and I called my vet in Victoria and they gave me yet another number of a vet in Naniamo\u2026who also didn\u2019t return my page\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I called Arlene back and she\u2019d been reading more on the web and she suggested that I bathe Pixie in tepid water\u2026 (no small feat when yer in a parking lot in a town 2 hours away from home)\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

So I put her inside my shirt and walked straight into a Tim Horton\u2019s and into the ladies room. I filled the sink full of tepid water and put Pixie in it\u2026she was so out of it she didn\u2019t even realize she was wet at first\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

It took about 20 minutes and she finally started to come around\u2026so I wrapped her up in paper towel and carried her out to the car\u2026I wet a bandana with drinking water and laid it on her belly and chest\u2026with her laying on her back in my arm and drove from Nanaimo to Cassidy where I stopped at a rest area and put her in the sink again\u2026this time she was awake and cranky\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

I was never so happy to see a little dog cranky.<\/span><\/p>\n

I drove the rest of the way home and got to my vet\u2019s office at 7:10 where they examined her and said she was good to go now\u2026at which point \u201cthe little darling\u201d got up and wandered over to the treat bowl for a snack.<\/span><\/p>\n

My vet rocks\u2026they triaged her after 7pm and didn\u2019t charge me a cent. And Pixie is good as new\u2026.so – my friend Arlene also rocks\u2026not only for saving Pixie but for calming me down about it too\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

And going forward\u2026Pixie will be in the back seat in the middle where the sun can\u2019t reach her \u2013 and I\u2019ll buy a pair of those kiddie shades you see parents using on their windows to protect their babies from the sun\u2026she\u2019ll be in the hard crate and if I have to I\u2019ll even buy a cooling pad for her crate\u2026I am gonna do my best to never get a scare like that again.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Pixie\u2019s asleep on the couch \u2013 and I\u2019m going to go hide in my bedroom closet and suck my thumb.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
