We ate in Robert\u2019s bedroom\u2026he toyed with his food and shoved the plate away saying he wasn\u2019t hungry. <\/p>\n

I found myself staring at the darkened closet door. I tried to stop myself, but I did it so often that eventually both Robert and Rosie caught me.<\/p>\n

Robert gave me the briefest of head shakes as if to tell me to stop or the cat would be out of the bag\u2026Rosie\u2026never one to let her mother on to anything she felt was untoward tried to ignore both of us. <\/p>\n

Eventually Mrs. K ran out of things to say, and as I sat there rubbing my arm and glancing furtively at the walk in closet door she asked what was wrong with me.<\/p>\n

\u201cGirl? You don\u2019t like the Chinese?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cno it\u2019s fine\u201d I replied \u201cI just can\u2019t eat anything with peppers in it\u201d I replied as I pushed rice and bean sprouts around on my plate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever do you mean?\u201d she looked up in time to catch my awkward glance at the closet\u2026\u201dand what is it that you are looking for? Is there someone in the closet?\u201d<\/p>\n

I held my breath as Mrs. K started to rise to her feet, but Rosie jumped up just in time to beat her to the punch\u2026\u201dI\u2019ll look Mama\u2026she\u2019s probably thinking about getting Robert into something clean\u201d<\/p>\n

Rosie bustled into the closet, turning the light on as she went\u2026I heard the distinctive sound of drawers opening and closeing and then the slight sound of breaking glass as she stepped on the syringe, grinding it into the carpet.<\/p>\n

Rosie came out of the closet with a rather smug look on her face, her eyes met the question in mine and she nodded. <\/p>\n

I sighed\u2026and turned to Robert who looked for all intents and purposes like he\u2019d like to yell at his sister but not in front of his mother…<\/p>\n

\u201ccan I help you to the shower?\u201d I asked<\/p>\n

\u201cno\u2026you can get the hell out\u201d he growled<\/p>\n

\u201cRoibhil\u00edn!\u201d Mrs K admonished\u2026\u201dthat\u2019s no way to speak to your intended\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
