the thing about getting to be an adult<\/strong><\/span>
is that there’s no more hiding from life<\/strong><\/span>

I went to my cousin’s for supper tonight<\/strong><\/span>
with my fadder<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
just as we were sitting down to eat <\/strong><\/span>
my phone rings <\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
it’s the VOD<\/span> <\/strong><\/span>
and she’s crying<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
her sister has passed<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
we mouth the platitudes<\/strong><\/span>
it is indeed a blessing<\/strong><\/span>
she is no longer in pain<\/strong><\/span>
it’s good she went to see her<\/strong><\/span>
it’s time to come home<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
and then I get to go back to the table <\/strong><\/span>
and tell my cousin and his wife<\/strong><\/span>
and my dad<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
my cousin and his wife <\/strong><\/span>
are from my fadder’s<\/span> side of the family <\/strong><\/span>
so they empathize <\/strong><\/span>
but then didn’t know El<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
my fadder<\/span>, on the other hand<\/strong><\/span>
bursts into tears<\/strong><\/span>
remembering the life that was<\/strong><\/span>
the years of fun when he and <\/strong><\/span>
the VOD<\/span> were still married<\/strong><\/span>
he’s very sad<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
me<\/strong><\/span>
I am curiously devoid of emotion<\/strong><\/span>
I didn’t have a close relationship with my aunt<\/strong><\/span>
and I’m more concerned about the VOD<\/span> than anything<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
I ended up out sitting by the firepit<\/span><\/strong><\/span>
in their back yard<\/strong><\/span>
in the rain<\/strong><\/span>
watching the rain clouds <\/strong><\/span>
and smelling the honeysuckle<\/strong><\/span>
not even really thinking about more<\/strong><\/span>
than watching the rain clouds<\/strong><\/span>

<\/strong><\/span>
there will be no service<\/strong><\/span>
she’s requested cremation and distribution of ashes<\/strong><\/span>
and the VOD<\/span> will be home in a day or two<\/strong><\/span>
<\/strong><\/span>
life just keeps carrying on<\/strong><\/span>
even when <\/strong><\/span>
all ya really want <\/strong><\/span>
is for it to stop long enough<\/strong><\/span>
to catch yer breath<\/strong><\/span>
<\/span><\/strong>
