Not too long after we went into the house I heard the sound of motorcycles coming up the hill behind the house, they stopped where I imagined the garden to be.<\/p>\n

I asked Mrs. K if the shutters at the back were closed and she allowed as they were. She was sitting in a large wing backed brocade chair in front of a roaring fire in the den, shotgun across her knees.<\/p>\n

I suggested that we move into the hallway as there were no windows there but she vetoed that idea saying that we\u2019d be fine there unless someone started shooting.<\/p>\n

I asked if we\u2019d be letting \u201cthe boys\u201d in and she informed me that we wouldn\u2019t until we were sure they were her boys.<\/p>\n

I was dumbfounded\u2026who the hell else would they be?<\/p>\n

I heard noise sounding like gunfire coming from the farm field and I turned to look at Mrs. K questioningly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy Roibhil\u00edn has made someone angry again\u201d she sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cpretty fuckin angry if ya ask me\u201d I muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cmind yer manners child\u201d she admonished<\/p>\n

\u201cwell seems to me that if people are shooting they\u2019re pretty fuckin angry\u201d I replied\u2026\u201dwhat the hell did he do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure I wouldna know\u201d she replied and then sunk back into her chair lips pressed together angrily. \u201che is tae much like his fadder\u2026always the one with th\u2019 grand scheme that ends up costing others and making them angry\u2026why the boy wouldna work an honest day is beyond me!\u201d<\/p>\n

The sound of gunfire got closer and I began to pace from the den to the foyer and back.<\/p>\n

\u201cyou\u2019ll nae cure problems that way child\u201d she told me, \u201csit here by the fire and we\u2019ll finish our wee doilies\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cok? Mrs. K?\u201d I began, \u201ccan you see just how absurd that sounds? People are shooting guns at each other out there\u2026and you\u2019re in here\u2026.and you want me to make sure my stitches are tight enough on a doilly \u2013 There IS Something Seriously Wrong With You People!\u201d I finished through clenched teeth.<\/p>\n

\u201cach\u201d she said\u2026\u201dif it t\u2019will make you feel better we can move downstairs to the shelter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe shelter? I asked, \u201cthere\u2019s a fucking shelter? WHADDAYAMEAN SHELTER?\u201d I hollered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of shelter? Like a bomb shelter? A safe room? What the hell are we talking about here? And why didn\u2019t ya say something about it before? Did ya just fuckin remember?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYa did\u2019na ask\u201d she smiled. \u201ccome child\u2026we\u2019ll retire to the shelter in tha basement\u201d and she rose, clutching her crochet basket in one hand and her shotgun in the other and let the way out of the den, through the foyer, along the hallway to the kitchen \u2013 where she turned left, leading to the butler\u2019s pantry.<\/p>\n

Between 2 sets of cupboards in the butler\u2019s pantry she leaned forward and pulled on a panel on the wall to reveal that under the servant\u2019s stairs there was a door, which she opened and flipped on a light.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome child\u201d she said to me as she descended, \u201cthe staff is already down here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat! I yelped, \u201cJust fucking great! The servants are safe\u2026but me? Me you hand a fucking shotgun to! Jesus Mary and motherfucking Joseph I can\u2019t wait to go home!\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned on the stair and leveled her gaze at me\u2026\u201dI\u2019ll not be telling ya agin to mind yer manner\u2019s girl!\u201d she barked.<\/p>\n
