the sound: <\/strong>Stevie Ray Vaughn \u2013 Tightrope<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>The Doors \u2013 Peace Frog<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Trooper \u2013 We\u2019re Here for a Good Time<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Crosby Stills Nash & Young \u2013 Almost Cut My Hair<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Janis Joplin \u2013 Try<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Allman Bros \u2013 Midnight Rider<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

The constable walks over to the table and stands behind Robert\u2019s chair. He clears his throat, looks at his mother and then down at his hands. \u201cRobert I am obligated to tell you that you have the right to remain silent\u2026\u201d he begins.<\/p>\n

His mother slaps the table top with the flat of her hand and for all intents and purposes it sounds suspiciously like a gunshot. (Having heard more than one in the last few days \u2013 it\u2019s a likely comparison!) accompanied by the jangling of her large golden charm bracelet.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot till after me tea!\u201d she exclaims in a voice that books no argument.<\/p>\n

The constable feels a need, none the less, \u201cbut, but Mama \u2013 they\u2019re waiting outside for me to bring him out\u201d he stammers.<\/p>\n

\u201cwell then,\u201d says their mother, \u201cthey\u2019ll be waiting outside longer, or they will be joining us\u2026.but you will not be taking your brother off to the hoosegow before the tea is done!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cit\u2019s ok Mama\u201d Robert begins, \u201cwee Jaimie\u2019s just doing his job\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cwee?\u201d I think<\/p>\n

His mother\u2019s response is a resounding \u201charrumph! Finish the tea!\u201d<\/p>\n

We all make haste to finish our tea. Mrs. K gets up as Robert does and begins to flutter about decidedly like someone approximately a third of her size. Robert turns to Jaimie and puts his hands up offering Jaimie the ability to re-cuff him.<\/p>\n

\u201cfat lot of good that\u2019ll do\u201d is Jaimie\u2019s response\u2026\u201dJesus, Mary and Joseph Robert\u2026do not make me have to shoot you in Mama\u2019s kitchen\u201d<\/p>\n

Once again the lips engage before the brain and I mutter into my teacup \u201cwhy not?\u2026he\u2019s already shot Barry\u201d.<\/p>\n

No sooner did the words come out of my mouth than I realized my mistake. I peek up over the rim of my teacup to see everyone in the room staring at me, slack mouthed\u2026\u201dshit shit shit\u201d is the best I can do.<\/p>\n

Mrs. K whips around to face Robert and Jaimie. \u201cdid you shoot your brother? Is that the accident this child alluded to earlier\u2026.answer me boy! DID YOU SHOOT YOUR BABY BROTHER????\u201d Funny, I think, how her accent disappears when she\u2019s angry.<\/p>\n

I look up at her and see snapping green eyes and two very red angry dots on her cheeks and think I am so very glad not to be on the receiving end of that just as Rosie plants a firm but vicious kick at my ankle under the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cMumph! Ow!\u201d I snort and choke on my tea.<\/p>\n

Robert hangs his head and just shakes it back and forth\u2026\u201dMama \u2013 you know the way he gets\u2026he just never stops\u2026.on and on and on\u2026.and it get\u2019s on my nerves\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cso you shoot him? HE GETS ON YOUR NERVES SO YOU SHOT HIM?\u201d her voice rises an octave and a decibel. She pauses and then gets deadly quiet\u2026.\u201cRoibhil\u00edn – you are you father\u2019s son\u2026and we all know what a waste of whiskey he was\u2026you get out of this home and you do not return until you can bring your brother home and home healthy!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell the Dr said he\u2019s gonna be fine!\u201d I pipe up and then slump down in my chair at the rather vivid glare\u2019s I get from all the people in the room.<\/p>\n

Robert and Jaimie head towards the kitchen door, Grey stands and moves towards his mother\u2026who turns to me and says with some vehemence\u2026\u201dYou! Young lady!\u2026You are going to get yourself into some verra verra serious trouble if you don\u2019t learn to curb that tongue!\u201d I notice that the accent is back.<\/p>\n

Grey and Rosie both turn to look at me as we hear the sound of Robert and Jaimie leave via the front door and the screen door slams behind them.<\/p>\n

\u201cyer not saying anything my own mother hasn\u2019t been trying to tell me most of my life\u201d I mutter yet again.<\/p>\n

\u201cTHEN LISTEN TO HER!\u201d the very dignified Mrs K shrieks at me in a most undignified manner. \u201cIf you learn nothing\u2026learn when to be still!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPoint taken\u201d I reply as she begins to weep.<\/p>\n

Three days later Robert, who has been charged with 2 counts of assaulting a police officer and vandalism of city property for the damage done to the parking meters he’d kicked the tops off of is let out on his mother\u2019s bond.<\/p>\n

While he\u2019s been gone, I\u2019ve been making myself comfortable in his house and spending a lot of time with his sister and his mother. I\u2019ve been learning important girl things like how to can vegetables, how to hoe a row, how to crochet doilies and the most all important \u2013 how to wash and iron those all stark whit Irish linen napkins and table cloths.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
