The sound: <\/strong>Steppenwolf \u2013 The Pusher<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Eric Clapton \u2013 Cocaine<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Rev Gary Davis \u2013 Cocaine Blues<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Velvet Underground \u2013 Heroin<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>The Rolling Stones \u2013 Mother\u2019s Little Helper<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Pink Floyd \u2013 Comfortably Numb<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Jackson Browne \u2013 Cocaine<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the fuck was that all about?\u201d I demand as we watch Greybeard and his men head to one of the other bar areas.<\/p>\n

Robert turns to me as if first noticing me. He gives his big head a shake and then turns to WonderWoman\u2026\u201dtake this little girl off to play somewhere\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cInside or out?\u201d she asks<\/p>\n

\u201cOh definitely out\u201d is the reply.<\/p>\n

She nods at me and I stand up on the bench seat and climb over the back of the booth. Rosie and WonderWoman both walk me towards the stairs to the second floor. Both gripping my arms tight enough to leave bruises and Rosie again tells me to be quiet.<\/p>\n

As we reach the bottom of the stairs I experience a moment of severe separation from reason and begin to yell. \u201cWhat the fuck is up with you fucking people? What the fuck is going on? Why am I here? What is this all about? And when do I get to go home? Why am I being taken out?\u201d “Whaddayameaninsideorout? WHATTHEFUCKISGOING ON?” I demand<\/p>\n

Rosie slaps her hand over my mouth and pulls me into the shadows of a hallway. \u201cAre you out of your mind little girl? Don\u2019t you know better than to pull that shit out here where they can see you?\u201d<\/p>\n

She and WonderWoman tighten their grips on my arms and virtually dance me up the stairs to the second level. We head towards the pinball machine area as it seems the least populated.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit\u201d WonderWoman barks at me and kind of shoves me into a large leather club chair while she and Rosie flop into chairs facing me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell?\u201d I demand<\/p>\n

\u201cLoose the \u2018tude kid\u201d Rosie answers, \u201call good things in time\u201d. I begin to sulk as a waitress comes over to take our orders. Rosie orders a round of beers and allows as I might as well get used to the taste of beer as I\u2019ve got a lot of it to drink back at the house.<\/p>\n

\u201cOk\u2026\u201d I begin once the waitress drops the round and leaves, \u201cyou both have got to understand my being freaked here\u2026I mean\u2026What the fuck?\u201d<\/p>\n

The ladies exchange looks and Rosie clears her throat. \u201cFirst let me explain about this place\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnly if it includes why I\u2019m here\u201d I reply, I need some fucking answers or I ain\u2019t gonna be so easy to get along with\u201d<\/p>\n

WonderWoman laughs \u201cthat\u2019s right little girl, you go ahead and get all tough and shit and see where that gets you\u201d<\/p>\n

Rosie sighs, \u201cJanis she\u2019s just scared\u201d she says and then turns to me as I look at her surprised. \u201cI guess by now that you\u2019ve figured out that we all have names other than the one\u2019s we use.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nod agreement and she carries on. \u201cI don\u2019t know how it is where you come from\u2026but we use these names to safeguard ourselves for all manner of things, rival clubs, the pigs, assholes that wannabee and even our real families…if ya can call them that. So yes, we all have real names, her\u2019s is Janis, and mine is Phyliss, what\u2019s yours?\u201d<\/p>\n

I pause thinking that this is a major show of trust on their part, and then immediately think\u2026 \u201cBut is it? Maybe it\u2019s just an attempt at making me feel safe?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cKaren\u201d I reply.<\/p>\n

\u201cOk Karen, here\u2019s the deal. Robert is the president of the club; he has boys to enforce and boys to work. He allows the boys to keep us and we (most times) like to be kept. We do what we are told and we don\u2019t ask too many questions. Capish?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut…but…but…\u201d I stutter<\/p>\n

\u201cRobert owns the Dump\u201d she goes on, \u201che\u2019s a business man\u201d she says with something akin to pride. \u201cHe gives us money to shop, eat, drink and get high if we want, and all we have to do is just do as he tells us when he tells us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if you don\u2019t want to do what Robert tells you?\u201d I ask<\/p>\n

\u201cThat don\u2019t happen.\u201d WonderWoman replies.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, come on\u2026I\u2019m in business\u2026I own a bar back home, I know what it\u2019s like to have staff, it ain\u2019t no walk in the park.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus little girl, yer a little on the slow side eh? We ain\u2019t staff, we\u2019re his property, his ‘pride and joy’ he calls us…he lets everyone know we’re his ‘family’.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once again the mouth opens before the brain engages\u2026\u201dnot fucking likely\u2026nobody owns this girl\u201d<\/p>\n
